Scrum is Going to Make Teams Go Faster

One of the most common selling sentence of scrum is that implementing scum will turbo boost the development teams. While this is true, it doesn’t mean that teams will suddenly develop faster…. I can almost hear you saying that “this is rubbish then”…

Let’s backtrack a bit. The technicalities of implementing a piece of software is the same no matter which process methodology is being used. Coding, testing, deployment, infrastructure, database optimisations, etc still need to be completed. There is no way we can skip or omit any of them.

What scrum gives us however, is a way to optimise our process and gain early business values

One example is that by breaking down our full products into minimum marketable stories, we’ll have a usable piece of the product each time we finish a story. If I waited until I’m satisifed with every single styling of this blog then it’s going to take another week until I can show this article to you. Instead, I released what I can first to bring values to you as soon as possible.

I can go on in more details but this post is going to be super long if I do so. Therefore I will give another example and we’ll go into more details in future posts.

The thing that we forget most in business is that requirements are ever changing. Contrary to what any of us wants and I know this since I was a full on developer, it’s not possible to fix an entire product spec in stone. It’s invitable that there will be changes in the market. In fact if we do not evolve and adapt, we will be extinct like the dinosaurs.

What scrum does is give the team a better ability to plan their work commitments. So that they are less likely to be hit with large changes during their sprint. Which means less context switching and in turn increases the team efficiency. Hence supporting faster delivery.

In conclusion, scrum helps builds high performing team. Its best practices are geared towards optimising the team and reducing wastes such as context switching. The technical development time will not change much but with optimisation, we will gain business values in a much more timelier fashion.
